How does Self Storage work?

Not sure how self storage works? Not a problem! With our help, you’ll be an expert in no time. Simply read our guide below and learn how it works.

What is self storage?

Self storage is a safe and secure way to store your belongings outside of your home. It’s a convenient service where you can rent storage space for items that may be too large for home or business. This can include items like furniture, appliances, sports equipment, seasonal decorations and more.

There are two main types of storage – personal storage and business storage.

Personal storage is designed for individuals and families who need extra space to store items like furniture, appliances and more. This could be needed for those moving house, undergoing a renovation, or simply need to free up space at home.

You may also be a student who needs to store some of their belongings during the summer holidays.

Business storage is designed for businesses who need space for stock, documents, or equipment. This could be needed if you’re relocating your business, need extra space during peak periods, or have overflow stock that can’t fit into the office space.

How does it work?

Renting a storage unit with Segment® Storage couldn’t be any simpler. Just follow these steps to get the most out of your unit:

1. Rent your self storage unit

Select and reserve your storage unit. You can do this by referring to our Size Guide for more information on our units and their capacity, or by visiting our location in person or contacting our team. Our units range from 15 sq ft to 250 sq ft.

Think about what you need storage for, whether it’s for personal or for business. This could impact the size of the unit that you need.

We also offer flexible rental options, so you can choose the rental period that best suits your needs.

If you find that the unit you reserved doesn’t meet your storage needs, don’t worry. We will make every effort to find you a different unit that better suits your requirements. Reservations can be made online, over the phone or in person at our store.

2: Pack your items for storage

Get your items ready for storage. Take extra care when packing fragile items and use the right packing materials to fill the gaps and protect your belongings.

Also, think about how you’ll transport your items to our storage facilities. We have pallet trucks available onsite, but it’s best to plan ahead and bring the appropriate transport and tools that you need.

3: Check in and move into your storage unit

When you’re ready to move into your unit, there are some security documents that we will need from you. These include:

  • A passport or driver’s license
  • Proof of address – such as a utility bill or bank statement (dated within the last 3 months)

Once you provide these documents, one of our friendly staff members will show you around our site and take you to your assigned unit. If you have any questions or concerns about presenting these documents, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

How long can you store with us?

We offer flexible rental options that can be tailored to your specific needs and budget. Whether you need short-term or long-term storage, we’re here to help you find an ideal solution.

While the cost of your rental may vary depending on your specific requirements, we are committed to assisting you in finding a storage solution that fits within your budget.

If you decide to stay with us, you are welcome to do so for as long as you need. However, if you choose to leave, we just require a 14-day notice.

What can you store in a storage unit?

You can store almost anything in a storage unit, including furniture, documents, stock, tools and more.

There are certain items that can’t be stored due to safety or insurance reasons. These items include flammable materials, toxic substances, explosives and hazardous waste.

Do you need to take out insurance for your belongings?

Most storage companies will expect you to take out some form of insurance on your belongings when you store with them.

We understand the importance of feeling confident about storing your possessions with us. While we strive to provide a secure and controlled environment, there are certain scenarios that may occur beyond our control.

To address this, we offer comprehensive insurance cover through Basil & Fry specifically designed for self storage. This insurance covers more than a standard household insurance policy. It also provides additional protections in case of unforeseen events.

Please note that the insurance policy is only valid while your goods are stored within your storage unit. It does not cover your belongings during the loading, unloading, or transit process.
