While in most cases your belongings will be safe in our storage facility, some scenarios are beyond our control. Certain acts of God such as a storm or flood can lead to unexpected damage or loss of your items. With this in mind, having Goods Protection for your storage unit can often be a good idea.
Goods Protection is specifically designed to protect your belongings whilst they are kept in a self storage unit. Goods Protection can cover a variety of items, including furniture, household appliances, and collectables, against risks like fire, theft, and environmental damage.
Reasons for needing Goods Protection can vary. For instance, you might require a place to store your items temporarily during a house move, after a family member’s passing, or due to a lack of space at home. Or, if you’re undertaking renovation work, you might need to store furniture or other belongings safely.
If you’re storing items of significant value — whether financial, sentimental, or both — having Goods Protection can provide peace of mind. You may wish to cover high-value items like electronics, jewellery, or antiques so they are adequately protected against potential risks.
Even with security measures and surveillance in place, there is always a degree of risk associated with storing your belongings off-site. Storage Goods Protection serves as a safeguard, providing peace of mind knowing that your items are protected against potential hazards.
If you’re storing unique, high-value, or specialist items, you may require a tailored policy. Specialist contents storage insurance is designed to offer extra protection for items such as:
These policies provide bespoke cover, ensuring that your possessions receive the level of protection they require. Depending on the insurer, additional protection may include cover for accidental damage, depreciation in value, and restoration costs.
When considering a policy, always check the terms of coverage, any exclusions, and whether specific storage conditions are required to maintain the validity of your policy.
While some standard home contents insurance policies may provide limited cover for items in storage, they often exclude specific risks that Goods Protection can cover. It’s worth having Goods Protection if you plan to store your possessions for an extended period or if you are concerned about particular risks.
Just as with homeowners insurance, renters insurance can offer some level of protection for belongings kept in storage. However, this cover varies, and you may be better off with a dedicated policy while you store.
The cost of protecting your goods can depend on several factors, including the provider you choose, the location of the storage facility, and the value of the items being stored. The higher the value of the possessions you wish to cover, the more it will cost to cover them.
When purchasing protection, you’ll typically need to provide an inventory of the items being stored and may need to meet certain conditions set by both your provider and the storage facility. Always check with your storage provider about their requirements and what’s included or excluded in any policy.
We provide comprehensive Goods Protection through Hiscox, specifically designed for self storage. This policy covers more perils than a standard household insurance policy and offers additional protection while your goods are stored. However, it does not cover items during loading, unloading, or transit.
Since this cover is separate from your household insurance, any claims made will not affect your no-claims discount.
The cover is continual — no need for annual renewals — and there are no admin fees for address changes or adjustments to your insured amount.
If you prefer to use an alternate insurance policy, you are welcome to do so. However, the policy must explicitly cover goods in storage and provide protection equal to or better than our Goods Protection.
You’re welcome to start with Goods Protection and switch to an approved alternative at any time.
